Chiaki Mukai astronaut and cardiovascular surgeon who became the first Japanese woman to go into space in 1994. After a second mission in 1998, she also became the first Japanese person to participate in two separate spaceflights.
Shidzue Kato a pioneer who fought for women’s rights and suffrage in Japan. When Japanese women finally gained the right to vote in 1946, Kato became the first woman elected to the Japanese Diet. This resilient figure lived until the age of 104.
